We were excited to teach our largest group of kids yet. We had a total of 1st through 7th graders. It was great to see the great progress in just a weeks time. Our kids learned about adding description to their writings, using great starting sentences, all while learning about agriculture. We had a great week and are looking forward to the next two sessions. Enjoy our Animoto!

On May 7, 2011 we finished our second round of Technology Bootcamp. We had 10 participants for this academy. We learned somethings from the first Technology Bootcamp and were able to make some changes to how we ran the second. One of the things we changed for this Bootcamp was having a third meeting day in the middle of the sessions. This helped field any questions, take care of problems, and showcase more applications.

During our the Technology Bootcamp II we focused on the Voicethread application. We continued our work with Wikispaces by adding our Voicethread projects to our SJVWP wiki. Anyone can visit the projects we created at http://sjvwp.wikispaces.com/Projects. We spent time exploring the Wiki and how to add information to it. We also learned about the application Evernote. We learned how to create an Evernote account, add it to our smartphones, and learned how the application workes.

We also read several articles and discussed their importance related to teaching technology in this time of change. During the last session we discussed a chapter from the NWP book Because Digital Writing Matters. For our article discussion we posted our thoughts and comments on our wiki.

One thing that we did not accomplish during this academy was an open program. We had planned a technology open program for our last meeting. Unfortunately we did not get enough people sign up for the day and had to cancel. We are looking at doing things differently for our next technology open program. We may look at planning for a smaller group in hopes it will build interest for future open programs.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09202850178010343558noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2964124965880836398.post-76437136283167135912011-05-14T15:01:00.000-07:002011-05-17T18:52:06.231-07:002011 Web Presence Retreat5/13/11
Kathee and I missed our connecting flight in Denver because of airplane maintenance problems in Fresno. We were split up and forced on two different airlines. I ended up with a ticket on our original airline a couple of hours later, but Kathee got a ticket to fly out of Denver at 8:00p.m. I felt horrible that she would miss all of the evening events and would get in really late. As I was entering the plane she texted me saying that she was on standby for the next flight out. Luckily she got the only ticket on that flight and actually arrived in MO a few minutes before me. We made it on time to the Opening Gathering.

We are working and staying at the Kansas City Marriott Country Club Plaza in Kansas City, MO. My roommate for this retreat is Kevin Hodgson who has an awesome blog at dogtrax.edublogs.org. The purpose of the Web Presence Retreat is to build a community site through the new NWP Connect site. We had a great evening of talking, eating, and learning. We discussed what draws us back to a website. As a group we found we go back to sites if there is:

interesting information or conversation

information that engages us

humorous or light

has different points of entry

has layered content

something or a place takes you there

has artistic aspects

commonalities that afford agency

being able to control stream of information

Needs dynamic content and static content

has a context in which interaction takes place

different spaces/needs addressed via access - utility; personal interest and the overlap of them (efficiency)

We then discussed our own sight and built an analog site using chart paper and paper widgets. We went to our rooms for the night because we had an early morning.

5/14/11
Most of our day was spent "playing" with the new connect site. We learned about each of the widgets and how to place them on the site pages. Kathee and I became frustrated about some limitations of some widgets. We expected the wiki widget to work differently. We had a vision in our head about how things should work and became bogged down by the restrictions. Although frustrated, we did overcome this and moved on. I think anytime we work with a new technology there are bound to be times we become frustrated, but the good thing about technology is one can find ways to work around the problem. Or as @pauloh put it, "Jeromy and Kathee, bent the program's will."

At the end of the meeting day on Saturday, Paul explained how to invite people to our community.

If a person has an NWPi profile have them log in at connect.nwp.org credentials (username and password). They will automatically be joined to the National Community. We need to get their primary email address at NWP.org and invite them into our community via Manage Community>User Management>Invite Users.

If a person does not have a NWP.org profile then have them login at connect.nwp.org. They need to click the Sign Up link. After they finish registering they will be sent to the NWP connect profile. We need to get their primary email address at NWP.org and invite them into our community via Manage Community>User Management>Invite Users.

Valorie Stokes had us watch a video. She discussed how we have been creating and need to be consumers now and watch the video (connect.nwp.org/web-presence/dashboard/custom-1).

5/15/11
This morning we were able to see other projects' websites. This was beneficial because we derived new ideas for use on our own site. I would like to keep watching these other sites grow and gain more ideas for our site. This morning was great because I felt we were able to accomplish more than the previous day. We gained some ideas from seeing the other websites.

Kathee, Beth (from the University of Maryland Writing Project), and I walked the Plaza. It is a beautiful shopping district. I am told that if you cross the river about 8 blocks up you enter into Kansas. We walked the river which had several fountains. It was a short walk as we had to catch our shuttle back to the airport.

Our trip back was uneventful. Kathee and I had a 3 hour layover in Denver so we got a chance to discuss life and SJVWP tech stuff over dinner and drinks.

Writing with my students is something I do daily without fail. I strive to have all of my students become great writers and under my instruction they do. My first grade students produce multi-paragraph research papers and enjoy writing them. My reputation as a teacher is the person to go to if someone has a questions about teaching writing. I am good at what I do.

My passion for teaching writing and the encouragement of my TC friend, Caryl Martin, drew me to the San Joaquin Valley Writing Project (SJVWP). Through the Invitational Summer Institute I joined other teachers to learn how to strengthen my skills as a writing teacher. We spent the summer teaching each other our best writing lessons, read and discussed articles, and wrote our own stories. I formed life long bonds with other teachers who I can discuss writing instruction. I became part of a community of writers who care about bringing an authentic voice to our student's writing. At the end of our summer journey we became Teacher Consultants with the Writing Project.

Through my continued work with SJVWP I have been able to teach other teachers about quality writing instruction. The Writing Project has not only had an impact on my life, but the lives of other teachers who I train as a Teacher Consultant. I have trained other teachers at school sites, have been a trainer in Advanced Academies, and continue to advocate for quality writing techniques with my colleagues and administration.

The SJVWP is my writing home. I have gained more from what I learned in one summer than any other writing training. I was a good writing teacher before. Now, because of the Writing Project, I am a great writing teacher. I want this same great experiences for other teachers. It is a terrible shame that the funding for this terrific opportunity is being cut. I would encourage all those who are in a position to reinstate the funding do so to keep the National Writing Project alive.
Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09202850178010343558noreply@blogger.com3tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2964124965880836398.post-16668130921172845212011-02-07T20:27:00.001-08:002011-03-22T20:04:02.604-07:00CWP Connections 2/5/11This was my first California Writing Project Connections meeting. It was a great day with great people. I hope I can attend these meetings from now on. The room was filled with dynamic teachers who care about writing and having their students progress in writing. I love being in a room full of committed teachers.

One of the teaching demonstration lessons was called "Teaching for Joy and Justice". We were introduced to the website CoalBlackVoices.com .The lesson began by listening to Kelly Norman Ellis' poem "Raised by Women" coalblackvoices.com/poets/kelly/index.html. After listening examples from a 6th grade student was shown. A digital story telling example was also shown. We were then encouraged to write our own "Raised By" poems.
My example:

Raised by the Hot Street

Raised by,
A mama who said, "Get out of this house!
I can't take you for one more minute."
Raised by the Hot, Hot asphalt street.
Feet burning,
Bike riding,
Tag playing,
Street.

"Stay out!"
Raised by,
The hot dusty field
Mud slinging,
Hide and seek,
Grape stealing,
Fields.

Raised by,
The cool water from the hose. . .

And so goes the rest of the story. There is only so much time in a day filled with so many great ideas.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09202850178010343558noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2964124965880836398.post-1169752105626140722010-12-19T10:15:00.000-08:002011-03-22T20:07:10.112-07:00WikiMy wiki is at http://jeromywinter.wikispaces.com/.
Students can type words or cut and paste words into a text box. When they submit the words they appear randomly in different patterns. Words that are most frequently used appear larger in the pattern.
This Wordle is one created by one of my first grade students. The students learned about winter throughout the week. We wrote words on chart paper that had to do with winter. I took the chart with the winter words to the computer lab. The student each wrote words into their Wordle. I printed each student's Wordle to post next to a snowman art project and a traditional writing project. Additionally, the students blogged about what they know about winter, Winter Writing Blog.
Students can use pictures and music and add text to make an amazing video. A variety of transitions and backgrounds can be used to make a video. This is an easy applications for students of all ages to use. Students simply upload pictures and arrange them in the sequence they wish them to be shown. They can add titles and sub-text to their pictures.

With my first grade students I worked one on one to help them learn the application. Each student read a expository story about an animal. They each then wrote their own story about their animal. The students sat with me to make their Animoto after their stories were complete. I taught the students to upload pictures of the animal they wrote about, add music, and write text from the books they wrote.
The following Animoto was created by one of my first grade students.
I use Google Forms to create an area for students to write about things they are learning. In Google Forms you can add word boxes, text boxes, multiple choice bubbles, check boxes, choose from boxes, scale, and grids. You can see one way I use Google Forms at, Write About ApplesAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09202850178010343558noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2964124965880836398.post-7525582690218009052010-11-30T21:16:00.000-08:002011-03-16T18:48:27.723-07:00Typing/BloggingThere are many different typing programs on the web. I chose a free kid friendly one for my 1st grade students to work on, http://www.learninggamesforkids.com/keyboarding_games.html. I began the year with them practicing typing because many of the students I have may have never used a computer before. They quickly became familiar with the keys on the keyboard. I will continue using typing programs throughout the year to enable the students to become more adept at typing.

As students learned to type, I gave them opportunities to use their skills in authentic ways. Students were excited to write their stories on the computer. I had the students summarize themes we were studying in the blog. I sent the blog address out to other teachers and administrators to get others to respond to the students. Listed here are some of the posts from the students:
My Pet Dinosaur
I found blogging easy to set up and easy for the students to use. I will continue to have the students blog throughout the year.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09202850178010343558noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2964124965880836398.post-15959882774616436702010-11-30T19:42:00.000-08:002011-03-16T18:49:01.377-07:00Voice ApplicationsAudioBoo and iPadio are two voice applications. Both iPadio and AudioBoo are easy applications to use. I prefer using AudioBoo because of it's simplicity, but both are easy to use. You can download these applications to your phone and begin using them. Once you download and set up an account students can begin recording. You can listen to the recordings on your phone or from your computer.

I used these applications to record students reading their writings. Listen to what they wrote at, http://audioboo.fm/JQWTeacher. Other ways I will use these applications is to record students reading their leveled readers. They can practice fluency by hearing theirselves read.Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09202850178010343558noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2964124965880836398.post-83496881927030289502010-11-29T18:52:00.000-08:002011-03-20T10:30:37.682-07:00Animoto Animals
The group began by listing things we do at our schools that include parents. After we made our lists we numbered the list from 1-3 to show the level of educational purpose. Some of the things I listed were:

1Partners in Print

1Parent Conferences

2Parent Club

2Parent Volunteers

2Open House

2Back to School

3Sporting Events

3Awards Assembly

3Carnivals

***The point made was that parental involvement does not always affect student achievement. Family involvement that is linked to student learning matters. Student achievement increases when families are involved in the academic aspect of their schooling. When parents are engaged in student academics at home students achieve at a higher rate.

Teachers need to build trust with families. Some examples of family involvement presented were:

Poetry Slam - Have families meet at a coffee shop to read their poetry.

WORDLE - Families again can meet at a coffee shop to read their WORDLEs. The parents can write their own and participate in the reading.

PhOLKS - Funds of knowledge photograph out of school life. Parents and students write an essay about a photograph taken by the student. Students can write about their picture. They write a caption for the picture. Then the parents write about the picture. Bring the picture and the two writings together.

Photo Poetry - Parents and students write a poem about something and books can be made from their writings. Ex. Alphabet book

Home School Journals

Family Dialogue Journals

Book Journal - A journal is passed from home to school. Students and parents read books together. They have a conversation about the book and note their conversation in the journal. The teacher responds to each entry.

Weekend Journals - What are the important things we learned this week. Students and parents write down what they learned for the week.

Suggested reading/site: Damion Frye - Home Journals
ABCya Kids Education and Technology MeetAnonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09202850178010343558noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2964124965880836398.post-77455997339150251132010-11-27T14:26:00.001-08:002011-03-15T17:54:21.557-07:00nwpam10 K-12 Writing Centers: Transforming Students, Schools, and SitesThis sessions presenters were Denise Abercrombie, Connecticut Writing Project - Storrs, Rebecca Damron, Oklahoma State University Writing Project, Cindy Dean, University of Maine Writing Project, Denise Patmon, Boston Writing Project, and Jennifer Wells, Central California Writing Project.

This session ended up being something different than I expected. When an early elementary teacher hears "writing centers," we automatically think literacy centers. This session was not about literacy centers at all, but was instead about writing centers like those at some colleges.

The presenters discussed peer editing. There were three different levels: elementary; high school; and elementary. We were supposed to rotate through each of the presenters, but most people stayed with the presenters that were speaking about their specific grade level.

Rebecca Damron, Oklahoma State University Writing Project and Heather Corbett, 5th grade teacher, Skyline Elementary School, Stillwater, Oklahoma discussed the curriculum they are developing to teach Corbett's 5th graders to become writing coaches. Writing centers empower students to use what they learn. The writers work 1:1 with the peer tutor with the writing that comes to them.

Some things that can be done at my school might be:

Simplify the forms to train 1st grade students on peer tutoring.

Create a list of questions for my students to edit their own papers.

Train 5th/6th students to peer tutor with my 1st grade students.

I need to:

Read more about Writing Centers

Get out my 6 traits box and books

Develop a question page for 1st graders to edit their own writing.

Anonymoushttp://www.blogger.com/profile/09202850178010343558noreply@blogger.com0
